Ayurveda Spring Cleanse: Pre-Cleanse

In Ayurveda, when major seasonal and elemental changes occur (Spring and Autumn), a cleanse is performed to help the body ease into the new season. During this time, food is simplified, a self-care practice is added, and spices and foods reflect the seasonal change.

As we enter spring, we have moved from Vata time of year (Winter; dry/cold) to Kapha time of year (Wet/Cold). We now prepare the body for Pitta time of year (Hot).

A spring cleanse is generally 7 days, a longer period of time than a fall cleanse. Why? Because over the course of the winter and spring, we have accumulated ama (toxin build up) and with the heat increasing, those toxins make their way to the surface. The goal of the cleanse is to reduce or eliminate our build up of ama. Or think about it this way, springtime is when we start to focus on spring cleaning and clearing out the garden so that things can bloom more easily.

It's time for our cleanse, and we are inviting you to participate! The Healthy Grocer has options for purchasing all self-care products and even your meals for the 7 day cleanse (or 3 day cleanse option). Here's the schedule for your pre-cleanse:

Pre-Cleanse (Monday, April 10th-Sunday, April 16th)

Day 1 (Monday, April 10th)

  2. Start a journal documenting your emotions, habits, and how your body feels.

  3. In your journal or on a calendar, note your eating habits (food, food temperature, tastes/flavors, time of day when you eat/snack, mood before and after eating, environment where you eat). If you are attending the workshop this week, bring it with you.
