The Healthy Grocer is proud to be part of a composting partnership with two local farms, Baken Creek Farm and Rowan Tree Farm, in Mechanicsburg. Between our organic produce department and our all natural deli, we have a lot of food scraps from onion peels to leaves of lettuce that break off. In the fall of 2018, Floor Manager Erica Binder reached out to the community seeking farmers to pick up the organic waste for composting. Both Katie Turner and Rowan Miller responded with an enthusiastic "yes!" In the past 6 months, we've been able to send out a few hundred pounds of produce scraps to compost.
This week, Rowan of Rowan Tree Farm shares a little bit about themselves and how they utilize the compost!
Rowan Tree Farm is a small, diverse farm raising organically grown vegetables, pastured Icelandic sheep for lamb meat and beautiful wool, and pastured hens for eggs. We are currently in the application process for organic certification. We offer a CSA during the summer months and participate in two local farmer's markets.
We love to live and farm by a quote by Wendell Berry “Sustainable agriculture is one which depleted neither the people nor the land”.
To learn more about Rowan Tree Farm, you can visit the farm store daily from 7 A.M. to 8 P.M. or anytime at www.rowantreefarm.com.
