DIY: Brightening Matcha & Citrus Facial Scrub

If you have been to a coffee or tea house within in the past two years, then you have surely witnessed the beauty that is Matcha! This ancient emerald elixir contains caffeine, L-Theanine, and catechins; more specifically ECGC’s (epigallocatechin gallate). These are powerful antioxidants that can help to promote

longevity and vitality by attacking free-radicals.

While I do love enjoying a cup of freshly whisked matcha with my morning read, I love using it in my household and bath products even more! Applying it to our skin topically, we can reap the benefits from matcha’s nutrient dense compounds. For this particular recipe, we’re going to whip up a matcha sugar scrub base, and amplify the brightening and awakening properties of the caffeine content by including a synergistic touch of grapefruit. Yummm!

  • 2 Tbs Organic Fractionated Coconut Oil

  • 1-1/2 tsp Organic Unrefined Sugar

  • 1/2 tsp Organic Matcha

  • 2 drops Organic Grapefruit Essential Oil

  • 1 small Glass Bowl

  1. In a small glass bowl, blend the sugar and matcha. Mix until thoroughly combined. (This helps to keep the matcha from clumping.)

  2. Next, add the organic fractionated coconut oil and organic grapefruit essential oil to your matcha and sugar mixture. Stir with a wooden or glass mixing utensil until all ingredients are blended. (Never use plastic or metal utensils/containers when creating your DIY products. These materials can leach heavy metals and other toxins into your creations.)

  3. Starting with a clean face, apply the scrub in small circular motions. Show your lips some love too!

  4. Rinse your face with warm water until residue is removed. If any oily residue is present, feel free to use a bit of your favorite cleanser to help wick that away!

  5. Finally, tone and moisturize as you would normally and enjoy your new radiance! Repeat weekly!
