DIY: Ayurvedic Calming Nasya Oil on the Go

Nasya oil is the distribution of herbs and oil through the nasal passages. This Ayurvedic practice can support dry nose, mental health, restful sleep, headaches, and provide seasonal respiratory support. It is one of the five main forms of cleansing in Pancha Karma.

During a Pancha Karma session in countries like India, ghee, coconut oil, milk, and sesame oil may be used for Nasya application, along with an oil and/or herbs. Clients will lay down on a massage table with the practitioner gently pouring warmed liquid into the client's nasal passages. However, if you want to get the benefits of Nasya on the go, here is a simple recipe and instructions.

  • Fill a dropper bottle with Sesame Oil and 4-8 drops of Lavender essential oil.

  • Place a few drops into the palm of your left hand.

  • Dip your pinky finger into the oil and insert gently into one of your nostrils.

  • Repeat for second nostril.

To do Marsha Nasya, Ayurveda expert, Dr. Vasant Lad, says "one massages the inner walls of the nose slowly, first clockwise, then counter-clockwise. This helps to relieve stress. It promotes tarpaka kapha and balances prana vata and sadhaka pitta. Use this treatment each morning and/or evening on an empty stomach."
