Recipe: Golden Milk Infusion for Concentration

Time to hit the books! Autumn is approaching, our school loans are growing, we are cramming for tests. Finding a bit of restorative balance before we get too run down is more vital than ever! I like to stay ahead of the distractions and stress by fortifying my body and mind in the best ways that I know how. When brain power is needed, I always turn to the neuron-boosting wellness of Lions Mane Mushroom. Lions Mane (Hericium Erinaceus) is a type of “tooth fungus” found on hardwoods throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. These dreamy frozen waterfall-looking mushrooms are characterized most notably by their long spines that suspend, cascading downward. Lions Mane mushrooms contain immune boosting compounds as well as inflammation busting constituents that have been shown to reduce mood flux. Strengthening the neurotransmitters in the brain, this medicinal and edible fungi is the perfect study-mate for those long nights in the campus library.

Here, I’ve written down my recipe for a golden milk-inspired honey infusion. I love making this because I can keep it with me at work and on the go. Add a spoonful of this adaptogenic honey to a cup of hot water or milk and you instantly have a delicious brain boosting potion!!

BRAIN-POWER! INFUSED HONEY

  • 1 ½ Tbsp Organic Lions Mane Powder

  • 1 tsp Organic Turmeric Powder

  • 3 Whole Organic Cardamom Pods

  • 1 Whole Vanilla Bean

  • A Pinch of Organic Nutmeg (whole)

  • A 6oz-8oz Jar of Your Favorite Raw Honey

DIRECTIONS:

Let’s start by preparing the spices!

  1. With a sharp knife, carefully slice down the length of your vanilla bean pod. Scrape the seeds from the inside walls of the pod, and set aside.

  2. Using a wood rasp or spice grater, shave of a pinch of fresh nutmeg powder and set aside. I like to shave off the outer-most layer and use the more potent nutmeg closer to the core- it just tastes better and the oils are still extremely aromatic.

Time to infuse some honey!

  1. Open your jar of honey and mix if necessary to distribute any settling and break up any extra dense spots. If your raw honey is a little too thick to stir, try giving it a lukewarm water bath for increments of 15 minutes. Check on it every couple of minutes or so, you just want to warm the jar a bit to loosen the honey.

  2. Adding very small amounts at a time, lightly dust the lions mane powder into your honey jar. Stir thoroughly and continue adding more until ingredients are completely blended. Repeat this method for the turmeric, vanilla seeds, whole cardamom, and fresh nutmeg.

  3. While your infused honey is ready for use immediately, the flavors will need about a week to really permeate and mingle. I store mine in a dark, cool place for this time.

  4. After you have allowed your honey to “set,” you can now start adding it to all of your favorite snack and beverages.
