Family Health & Fitness

Health and Fitness – they feel like buzzwords these days, but they are more than words – they are a lifestyle. Often when you think of fitness, you think six packs abs and buns of steel. However, what if I told you it’s not about outward appearances? On my journey to live a healthier, more fit, lifestyle, I discovered something I’d never really considered: my kids are watching. Not only are they watching, they are doing. As I began to make healthier choices, I found that my children also enjoyed the benefits of these choices. Often choosing delicious smoothies over sugary cereals or salads over french fries. Often fresh veggies & fruit are the preferred after school snack in my home. They discovered that being healthy isn’t a chore and it surely doesn’t have to be boring!

Being healthy, it isn’t just about physical health, but mental and emotional health as well. Repeat after me – self care isn’t selfish. Now, say it one more time.

As a monthly challenge to myself, I’ve taken time, just 10 minutes, to meditate every night. Working on my mental health, clearing my mind and preparing for a good night’s rest began as a chore, now it is a special time for me. My daughter has chosen to join me in ‘quiet time’ and has encouraged her brothers to do the same. (They’re still a work in progress.)

As a mother of three, initially I thought “but I’m taking time away from the kids.” Then one snowy morning, I woke up to the sounds of my two youngest exercising in the living room. When I came down, they rushed over to show me their muscles and reminded me that it was my turn. But, fitness isn’t only found in the gym. It includes our weekly hikes at Wildwood Park, family walks at Adams-Ricci ,and nightly living room dance parties. It includes talking about our day while swinging at the playground, and quiet time to settle our thoughts; Its talking about how to be a better person, how to make good choices and leave a positive impact on those around us. Because the more good you put in, the more good you have to give!
