Compost Partner: Baken Creek Farm
The Healthy Grocer is proud to be part of a composting partnership with two local farms, Baken Creek Farm and Rowan Tree Farm, in Mechanicsburg. Between our organic produce department and our all natural deli, we have a lot of food scraps from onion peels to leaves of lettuce that break off. In the fall of 2018, Floor Manager Erica Binder reached out to the community seeking farmers to pick up the organic waste for composting. Both Katie Turner and Rowan Miller responded with an enthusiastic "yes!" In the past 6 months, we've been able to send out a few hundred pounds of produce scraps to compos
This week, Katie of Baken Creek Farm shares a little bit about themselves and how they utilize the compost!
Katie and Gray Turner run Baken Creek Farm in Landisburg, PA, among the beautiful rolling hills of Perry
County. As young, beginning farmers, they are passionately pursuing their dream of producing wholesome and delicious foods for the community in a way that works with nature, not against it. They both grew up in the suburbs (Camp Hill and Mechanicsburg), but found a deep appreciation for nature and farming. This inspired them to find their own piece of land to nurture. They’ve been growing their homestead over the past several years and are excited to now make their products available to the public. In 2019, they will be offering produce, cut flowers, crafts, and more.
“We love getting our compost materials from the Healthy Grocer every week - the chickens enjoy picking through it, and we love that we are getting great organic matter for our market garden beds,” says Katie. The green vegetable and fruit waste is mixed together with wood chips and chicken litter to decompose into an excellent soil amendment that helps contribute to healthy soils at the farm. Healthy soils lead to healthy food, and in turn, healthy people!
Katie will be at The Healthy Grocer on Thursday, May 2nd at 6:30 P.M. to talk about composting, including how to start your own backyard compost. Click here to register.
